So,
Seeing as this post has had many hits as of late, very probable that it’s because of the TV, I decided to go and clean up some obvious junk from it, thanks to janitor STR. Nothing is changed except some mistakes and fill-words to correct sentences. I have also replaced the caps with Full HD ones from the BDs. Originally, they were from an up-scaled DVD source video – And HA! You didn’t know that, did ya!
So any way, yeah, I bumped this up to front page. No harm in that, right? Also it was fun to see how some thoughts I had then came into the TV, like my conclusion on Yuu.
Anyway, here is the slightly beefed up version of my take on the OVA.
Dear readers,
Have you ever had that feeling that perhaps ‘the powers that be’ have finally…finally stumbled upon your life’s file? That finally, it is your turn to enjoy life to the fullest? Well guess what guys, my turn has finally come.
Yes, I am implying that at the moment, not even the twelve plagues can sour my great mood. Nah uh! I feel like I can fly. I feel like I can touch the sky and I’m no Kelly.
In case someone hasn’t noticed, this is all thanks to one not so short OVA globally otaku’d over as Black★Rock Shooter.
Now I have ready many comments and reviews about this great yuri short and I just can’t comprehend how anyone would be a whiny little brat about it in any way. Okay, granted I can follow those who wanted more but the OVA was already way over the usual 3omin average playtime for most OVAs. And if you do remember, I fan’d over it way back when the PV came out thinking that it would be a series so I too want more. Nay, even if I hadn’t known about it, I would still want more.
Then there were those denying the Oh! Such obvious yuri in the show. For crying out loud, even a primary scholar could pick the vibes up were they already attuned (Foretold in the genes that they’d bat for both teams) to the force (the yuri force) like first series Nanoha & Fate. *Ahem* I was grinning from the first frame to the last because of the intensity of the force. Vader has nothing on them girls.
And as if that weren’t enough, we then have the ungrateful + whiny brats that want to diss the everyday life complaining how there was more talking than action. How they were annoyed by the studio showering us with full attention to everyday lives of Yomi (Oh snap! There is that flashback to my favourite category A) and Kuroi (Double snap! Black of Team B of a certain group or is that Misa?!). I don’t know why but I always get carried away when it comes to cool characters with familiar names.
But I am getting de-railed here. So about these ungrateful whiny brats cursing the lack of action, which by the way, there was quite enough of as far as I could see and I should know for I am quite an action on demand freak. It’s as if they skipped over the years they spent back-mouthing their parents for grounding them and jumped straight to internet porn and *magic*chan sites straight from the womb.
I found the everyday things quite fulfilling and important when it came to the story which by the way….yes, you guessed it right, had complains too. But this is to be expected. There isn’t a Nolan-san in Anime industry yet. Well, Hideaki-san tries but all you get from him is usually more mind bending and less anything else. Yes I still want my crazy unit 00 & 02 pilot yuri damn it! And if you don’t know what I am going on about, here is a hint word; EVA.
Then there are complaints about the editing. I don’t know anymore. It seems to me, everyone wants to be a critic these days. And what’s the trick of doing that? Hating abso-f***kin’-lutely everything except that which is loved by 99% of the critic-dom.
It’s MADNESS!
I found the layering of the story quite easy to follow and frankly refreshing. I am sure I’ve seen the method many times before somewhere but this is the first time I can remember it clearly. Not that and I repeat for the umpteenth time, not that I watch anything for plot. If my heart is moved and my brain is kept interested, I could watch a 12 hour drama about a janitor in a third country prison with the plot being how he will get his job done each week without the necessary equipment. But enough bitchin’. This is starting to sour my great mood.
Smile. Smile.
The gift unwraps with Black Rock Shooter battling a mysterious girl (Who I think is Black Gold Saw) within the ‘Spirit world’. The battle is taking place on a small island, so small in fact that it looks like a castle of wheels…or whatever floats your boat…or you know, whatever floats boats….Erg!
The theme is the kind that goes “My sword is bigger than yours, HA! HA!” except no one is laughing. Black Rock Shooter is all there looking cool with the ‘half-dressed black Goth with cool scars and the awesome mieta-blue glowing eye thing going and obviously wielding a sword. Hers is the small kind though as Zampakutou showed us, size doesn’t really matter.
Her red themed (eyes. Red eyed or not blue eyes = Na ah side!) opponent is looking like she has the higher ground both figuratively and literally speaking. Her bigass sword looks like an extension of her own body the way she swings that thing around. I have my own theories about the identity of the host in the real world but I am getting ahead of pace. let me (try to) explain.
From what I gathered, the universe (BRS universe that is) has two worlds. To try and make sense of things I coded them the spirit world and the physical world. Not that there wasn’t phyisical contact up there, cause there was. Lots and lots of violent physical contact and some of the other kind (if you know what I mean, No? maybe later then).
Anyway, in BRS, the trigger to go to the physical world ain’t what you were preached about which is shading your physical form, sometimes in a bloody display of your interns on the tarmac, but rather, when your emotions hit over 9000 on the negative meter. In other words, when you are so pissed you’d kick poochie.
So it’s when your emotions go pure sour that you reek of evil thoughts or on the blink of jumping off that cliff edge that you are approached by a being from the spiritual world. After you make the contract, then you can go sort out your feelings in the other world through no holds barred duels to your heart’s content.
So back to the story, BRS is battling it out with mysterious red eyed girl in the confusingly square white and black tiled walls of a world. The battle is intense but short lived.
Enter Kuroi Mato. Seeing as she is admiring her school uniform on the wall in anticipation of wearing it for the first time, obvious proof that she hasn’t been to a real school yet, I would place her at 12 or 13 years old. I am too lazy to research wiki so there. Anyway this fresh fish in the sea wakes up with anticipation of her first day in junior high or as it is known elsewhere, middle school, with a kilowatt smile. She brushes teeth in the time it takes her toast to be done and without burning to meet her tomboyish Mom that I thought to be her Dad at first. No, I am dead serious. Lady looks like a Dude. I ain’t complaining. I prefer them like that. With the exception of ‘Lunar Boobs’ of course.
Mato-chan is so cute. Even whining about waking up her little bro is cute. The way she holds her buttery toast is also cute. By the gods that pouty face is a tu-trip on. Like Mom-boy like daughter-boy that messy ‘do is also a charm point. Sigh, bliss.
“Asa da yo~” Kya~n.
But wait, that is nothing. Here comes time to try on that seifuku for the first time ever. It be a momentous occasion for the records, only our Dear Mato has not discovered the wonders of ‘Dear Mr Diary’ or maybe she is so beyond that like yours truly.
Once in it (The uniform I mean), she looks like she was ripped out of the Saki universe only her skirt defies the laws of magic skirt.’ But even that isn’t the best part, it’s all about them pigtails. Like if I were P.Shiki (Perv Tohno Shiki) I’d die out of the moe-ness of it all. And yes, I know that ain’t a word.
But wait some more…That isn’t enough, no. Mato has to pull a Yukirin on me and it’s then that I die for the first time. I had to wait till next day to continue watching after I revived via ‘this is Awesome no jutsu’.Finally Mato leaves for School.
Quick World Change to the Spirit World.
Black Rock shooter is standing gallantly on a high broken bridge looking all cool and badass but wait…Is that…?!! No, it can’t be. I don’t believe it. She’s wielding the bigass gun of hers that looks more like a tank gun and it is infused with her right arm. So badass!
World Change Again back to the Physical World.
Mato takes a detour on her way to school. She seems to have a favourite place of hers up on the hill that overlooks the entire town/city. Even I am blown away, and not by the overwhelming cherry blossoms but the whole scene. I could just see why it took the anime so long to finally be released. I couldn’t stop admiring the scene. You’d win fifty girlfriends a day just by taking them to the place. Mato takes a pic of the scene to send to her tumblr.
She wins over nine thousand followers.
But while I and Mato love the scenery to bits, there is no time. Just like any normal naive Japanese girl, Mato takes the dart/train to school. She makes it barely. She spies the train for fellow schoolmates. There are quite a few but already paired up. Probably were childhood friends since age 2 or something. Mato gets nervous. She needs to find her grab-grab buddy soon.
And yet another Yukirin moment. Definitely nervous now.
And all the girls are all paired off. Don’t get discouraged Mato, you can do it. Believe in me who believes in you.
As fates would have it…Enter my adrenaline meter hitting the red zone for that much awaited first glimpse of…of…
Marcedes?!!! In front of my School gate?!!!! I am so gonna…but wait…Isn’t that….
KYAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!
It is! It so is! It so is Yomi. And she’s riding shotgun. Ha!
Mato is in love. At first sight! But to her I say, “Get in line twin tails. *Hissssss!*”
Mato gets shocked when the goddess focuses on her but the goddess ignores us. She sees us unworthy of her greatness. Awwww!
But we soon get another chance for it looks like our love is single too. We shall make her ours! Yes we shall.
*brofists Mato*
It is Love at first sight after all seeing as we can’t seem to be able to take our eyes off that mysterious green eyed and haired girl. She’s so pretty. I wonder what she smells like.
No!
Forget about smell, how about a name?
Mato quickly spies the mysterious girl’s name on the seat plan that was given to each student.
Her name is ‘Kotori Asobi’!
Quick skip to the Spirit World where we are shown DFC BRS just walking to her destiny and standing there looking all cool.
But we are brought back to the entrance ceremony in the physical world where the principle is giving his ‘inspiring’ speech he had been practicing all summer, that is if it isn’t a re-polish of the ones he gave previously. Sigh.
Watch how the other girls have already paired off but Mato is still alone and so is ‘Kotori Asobi’. Mato is trying desperately to figure out how to get close to Kotori. She thinks of many pickup lines but all she comes up with is….
She forgets it after getting Kotori’s attention once she hears the other girl’s voice. I too felt my mind swimming once I heard her voice for the first time. She’s Canaan. That Nasu Canaan.
Anyway, Mato is lost for words, all her laid out plans went through the window so she marvels about Mato’s height instead. Kotori isn’t impressed. She walks away from the crazy girl. Mato ain’t giving up yet though. She tries again this time starting from the beginning with the Mercedes. Mato thinks how unusual it is to go to school by car. Kotori replies that she didn’t want to but her father insisted. Mato wonders if Kotori lives near the school but no. Instead they live in the same neighbourhood.
Yay~
Mato subtly asks Kotori to go to school with her from then on by mentioning that she came to school by train. She made it sound like it was infinitely greater than going by private car. Oh you! But it worked. Kotori favours the travel by train for the future.
They’ve become a pair. From now on, no single girls will be seen walking the grounds, I think.
As they walk on, they talk about their lives, as short as they are to date, and Mato finally learns the real name of Kotori.
Her name is read ‘Takanashi’ not Kotori Asobi’. Takanashi Yomi. They share smiles while giving each other permission to go by their first names.
Stage One; Introductions, clear!
From then on, they are inseparable, their wavelength is on the same frequency, their attention is glued to the other. Nothing else seems to matter.
Look at them, even in the class photo their eyes are on each other instead and nothing else. And that’s just the beginning.
Back to the spirit world, BRS has finally arrived to her destination – the millennium castle (As I like to call it) and are all those crosses graves? How many invaders did the dweller within destroy? Well, at least she gave them burials.
Back in the physical world, it is morning and Yomi is waiting for Mato at the crossroad in their neighbourhood to walk to school together. Though she denies it, I bet Yomi was there like an hour early.
Awww
The two walk to school while discussing club choices. While Yomi hadn’t decided yet, Mato was going to join the basketball club. Mato advices Yomi to join as well seeing as she is tall but Yomi declines. While Mato sees her height as an advantage, Yomi does not. The two continue on with giggles mixed in with the conversation.
A quick switch to the spiritual world shows us BRS trying to make her way to the main part of the castle. It is not an easy fit because that castle is huge!
Back to class in the physical world, Mato and Yomi are discussing their favourite subjects. Yomi loves mathematics while Mato…She hasn’t decided on which. This means that she is a Maimai & Kojiharu class mage. In other words, the dumb kind. They share more giggles.
In the spiritual world, BRS makes it to the main castle. The scene reminds me of Maka and Chrona’s first meeting in Soul Eater. In another place, we are shown a mystery figure on a cliff. Her tail is wagging but we can’t tell who they are for we are facing their back and we have no choice but to admire their cute tail and their ‘hands of God’.
Back to school in the physical world, we are in gym watching Mato do her magic in basketball. She is super good despite her height. She reminds me of that short guy from Seito Shokun! JDrama. She is totally wiping the floor with the rest of the members. Yomi is watching. She spies the volleyball club who are sharing the gym with the basketball club members. Perhaps a thought hits her!
But so soon, we are brought back to the spiritual world. The first image we see is Yomi’s hair-styled head looking down towards the double doors which soon open with BRS standing before them.
Not even a second after, we are brought back to the physical world. Yomi is sitting alone in class doing some work. Mato drops in while rubbing her DFC into Yomi’s back. She begs Yomi to lend her the homework and while she gives ‘the speech’, Yomi can’t resist the kawaii factor so she gives the work over anyways.
Mato is super touched. She rubs her cheek with Yomi while she shows her love for Yomi by saying ‘I love you’ with ‘aishiteru’, not ‘daisuki’. But even if I still remember where that got us with Kanon and Marin, this time it feels different.
While Mato copies the work at the speed of Light (Yagami not 30×10⁸), Yomi informs her that she has decided on the club to which she will join. She says it ain’t basketball but looks like it anyways. As if she didn’t choose it for its location. Now Mato can’t keep her eyes of Yomi and vice-versa.
We are taken back to the spiritual world. BRS marches forward with purpose towards the Queen on a high throne. The Queen has a death scythe, killer highs, bat wings and super cool horns to go with the deadly stare that comes off in waves through her smothering green orbs.
Ladies and gentlemen, enter Dead Master!
Queue screams of delight from me upon this and even more screams when BRS extends her arm towards Dead Master which she meant as ‘oide’ (Come with me/come here) but Dead Master understood as ‘koi’ (bring it – like a challenge.) For some reason no words were exchanged at all in the Spiritual World apart from grunts. And so Dead Master promptly complies by sending in her two deadly skull heads to reap BRS a new one.
Teasing us to no end, we are brought back to the physical world where in their special place (It may not be Chikane & Himeko’s forbidden flower garden or Sachiko & Yumi’s rose garden but it still is a charm point). By this time I am already sold. Every pair who get themselves a special place are already couples. That’s rule No.5 of my rules of yuri couples.
Anyway, Mato is waiting there looking bored out of her skull but brightens up immediately upon seeing Yomi. The two leave together and take the train home. Those guys sitting in front of Yomi and Mato seem to have great ero-force resistance for were it me, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from ogling those bare stomachs of Mato and Yomi’s damn it! I would even be attempted to see under those shirts.
But wait, the two weren’t returning home! They were headed into town to hang out. It seemed more like a date to me. Yomi’s Mom calls worried but Yomi tells her that she’s with Mato. Looks like at this point both Yomi and Mato’s parents are already familiar with the other’s friend quite well.
After the two’s shopping strip, before the go their separate ways Mato asks Yomi if she still has some free time. Yomi says she does and Mato takes her to a place.
Back in Spirit world, BRS has had her ass handed to her. She shares a stare moment with Dead Master and seeing as her opponent seemed to respond to nothing but combat, BRS decides to do things the ‘hard way’. Activating her Geass of War, BRS attacks!
In the Physical World, the place that Mato wanted to take Yomi to is that cliff of wonders. Yomi is real impressed. For good reason too for even I am impressed, and this is like my fourth time seeing the scene. To make it even more wonderful, it’s sunset time.
The place is Mato’s secret place. The one that every hero or heroine has that they go to for enlightenment or take a girl to confess to or whatever. I am thinking that Mato brought Yomi there for the same reasons and….I am right. At least I think I am. Yomi confesses that she is envious of Mato for having a place that she loves so much like the town they are looking over. She says that since she moves all the time, Yomi doesn’t have such a place.
She’ looking sad so Mato asks her to stay for the rest of her life there. Mato wants Yomi to stay for she can’t stand the thought of Yomi leaving!
And I am not making this up!
Kyan~
Yomi decides that she will try to stay. Mato takes that moment to seal their promise in stone. She gets engaged to Yomi by giving her a phone strap she had bought earlier. Turns out they come in pairs as Mato has one that looks just like the one she’s giving to Yomi on her cell.
With the sunset and the music in the background and everything, this scene was so damn romantic. Yomi’s smile is heart shattering. She promises to treasure the gift. The two smile their secret smiles at each other some more.
Back in the spiritual world, Dead Master and BRs are going at it. Talk about sweet action sequences. The camera angles were great. The two seemed like they were dancing. How Dead Master could fight in those shoes, me knows not but it just goes to show her expertise. BRS has to fight off the gigantic skulls as well. Spin-zaku’s bullet dodging has nothing on Dead Master. Total Awesomeness! Somewhere else, we are shown the tailed girl once again. We get to see their face this time though. HmmmI think I know her from somewhere…
Back in the physical world, Yomi and Mato are getting on splendidly and frequent their ‘place of promise’ before and after school. During club activities, Mato is dunking like crazy and nobody receives or spikes like Yomi does on the other side of the court in volleyball. They even call each other while they are only meters away.
The yuri force is strong in these two.
Life has never been sweeter. The two go on festivals together. They even frequent the movies….together. They have study sessions at each other’s’ homes and read manga together. I am disappoint to see all the males on the cover though! Why couldn’t they read normal manga like Himeko! This is going to be a problem later when they hit the smexing stage as they won’t have a single idea on where to begin.
Sigh
The two still go on shopping dates. Instead of the ribbon exchange that Nanoha & Fate did, Mato and Yomi change scarfs instead. I think I have seen that ‘here, wear my scarf’ kind of scene before but where? Oh well. The love is radiating off these two in waves. They even go to the shrine too to pray for their fortune. Totally what normal couples would be doing is what Yomi and Mato are doing.
A quick switch over to the spiritual world shows us the tailed girl but as soon as she jumps off the cliff she was observing on, we switch back to the physical world.
During practice, Mato gets injured, to Yomi’s freight. But fear not, the basketball club manager is quite a dependable girl. She helps Mato off the court and attends to her wounds. Yomi who had been distracted by the commotion is brought back to her senses when their captain shouts at her. Still, her concentration is still on her Mato. It turns out the injury wasn’t serious.
Queue a shot of the cliff in the spiritual world that tail girl was standing on before. she isn’t there anymore. Why they showed us that….Spoilers! Spoilers!
Back at school it’s already second year. New class plans have been posted. Yomi and Mato are put into different classes.
DOH!
Mato tries to reason that they could still see each other out of class and during club practices but it ain’t working. It just ain’t the same. They can’t do a thing about it.
Sad puppies are sad!
Even before the first bell goes to break for lunch, Mato is already out of her class and standing before Yomi’s classroom entrance. Not to lose to her love, the first person to appear once the door is open isn’t the teacher, that it is supposed to be, but Yomi. The two so think alike. They smile at each other.
Awww II
Their classes are just next to each other but even a wall is still a nuisance. They don’t waste their break doing anything else but stay close and converse. But things are not to be, for that loli-like basketball club manager AKA Yuu, interrupts the two. Turns out she’s in the same class as Mato and I’d bet my whiskers on it that she took Yomi’s seat.
Beware, I am one of those who take shipping super seriously and I smell and rat! I bet Yomi agrees with me on this. And I know I am right for not long after, Mato is starting to take a shine to that devious loli. Look at her touching our Mato in guise of first aid.
I don’t like it.
I can tolerate the club thingy but to think that that devil of a girl is now spending after school time with Mato in their secret place at school?!!
MADNESS!
Okay, she is now walking to and from school with them! How come Mato can’t sense the wrongness of it all?! I bet Yomi didn’t say a single word on their way to the train station yet still Mato didn’t notice. Yuu finally splits with the two. On the train, Mato has finally noticed how unfair she had been to Yomi, or so I thought but she just apologised for talking about basketball things that Yomi wouldn’t know about.
It isn’t just about that you Mato, you!
Just when I thought she wouldn’t sink any lower, Mato completely forgets about spending break time with Yomi and instead stays in her class to chat with Yuu. Yomi comes by but she doesn’t interrupt. It seems all too wrong to walk up to the two then. They were probably talking about their cool club president once again.
Yomi stand by the door watching the two smile at each other, looking like they were in a world of their own. If Yomi thought she was Mato’s world before, I bet that scene hurt like hell. Mato never even once spared a glance towards Yomi until Yomi’s aura changed. But even then, all Mato did was look towards the door and nothing more. When she did look, there was no one there.
Scene switch to the Spiritual World and Dead Master is still getting it on with Black Rock Shooter. The cool battle continues on. They even do the air battle thingy. This time around, BRS’s canon transforms and she defeats the skulls. Dead master breaks into a run and BRS runs after her.
Back to school, Mato waits for Yomi so they could go home together, or was she waiting for Yuu, I can’t tell anymore. It’s Yuu who shows up anyway. Mato asks Yuu if she’s seen Yomi. Yuu hadn’t so they go to ask the volleyball club members. It turns out that Yomi had left school earlier. The member points out that it must have been important if Yomi had left without informing Mato.
Heh, looks like their relationship is already public.
Mato walks solemnly home alone all the while staring at her cell. Me thinks that deep down she felt something was wrong and that it was her fault so the guilt was stopping her from making that call or better yet, finding the words to mail to Yomi. She spent the whole evening thinking of what to mail Yomi and when I thought she had finally settled for an apology…Well…You can read what she mailed above. Seriously! Then she waits the whole night for a reply that I was sure wouldn’t come.
Next day Yomi doesn’t show up to their meeting place. Mato goes to school alone. She sends a ‘Good morning’ text while on the train but no reply. At school, she is distracted, starting to feel the pain of separation. I want to say, ‘serves you right’ but she looks so emo-moe I feel her pain too. She goes to Yomi’s class but Yomi isn’t there. It seems she didn’t come to school. Enter more pain when the classmate she had asked wondered why Mato asks since she herself is the closest to Yomi. She advices Mato to mail Yomi.
At end of classes, Mato’s phone vibes and she is super excited from her gloomy state but checking the screen for I.D, it’s not whom she was expecting but from her Mom. She sighs in disappointment or is it relief! Reading the message, she is ordered to go straight home after school. When she read ‘Takanashi’, ‘Police’ and ‘Missing’, Mato is out of the school gate like a bat out of hell.
When she gets home, the police are waiting for her. Yomi’s parents had asked the police to look for Yomi for she had been missing since the day before. Seems she hadn’t returned home when she left school. The police wonder if she had run away from home since she had left the school in good health but Mato informs them that Yomi isn’t the kind of girl to run away from home. The policemen say that Yomi”s parents said as much.
Turns out even the police force knows of Yomi’s and Mato’s close relationship. Explains why they did a beeline for her house! They wonder if there was something bothering Yomi in anyway but our Mato was so wrapped around Yuu’s powers of loli to notice.
Queue girly tears as Mato relayed what transpired since before Yomi’s disappearance. In her description she finally sees where everything went wrong, at least I think she does, and so the water works commence.
I too baw’d at this scene.
Mato looks like her spirit has left her. In the night the tears begin anew. Note that it has only been a day since Yomi disappeared.
Koi da ze!
We are back to the Spiritual world. BRS is still in pursuit of Dead Master. They end up in the main room where the throne dwells. The battle continues on with Dead Master manipulating chains like an extension of her own skin while BRS tries to dodge and slice the things. Dead Master and BRS go head to head, their super fashion costumes bellowing as they cut through the air.
I take this opportunity to say I love the costumes. I especially love Dead Master’s as a whole and BRS’s skimpy bra that looks like it came right out of Kuroko’s wardrobe.
Black Rock Shooter’s weapon transforms back into a canon and shoots at Dead Master but it’s like trying to hit BLACK.. That girl can use a scythe.
BRS breaks said scythe when Dead Master gets cocky but my girl isn’t fazed at all. In fact she does the Oh so evil claw-licking before she gets back into the game and in no time, BRS is forced on the defensive. In even lesser time, Dead Master has Black Rock Shooter wrapped up nicely like a present in her chains. I wonder what she’s planning to do to a chained BRS!!
Back at school, the rumours of Yomi’s disappearance are spreading like wildfire. The guesses are still the same, that she ran away from home but at the same time, they agree that she wasn’t the kind of girl to run away from home. So then they switch to her being kidnapped for ransom seeing she was rich! Mato is taking it all in. She is feeling the emptiness grow more and more every time she see that empty desk, or walks home alone.
Yuu tries to cheer her up and she partially succeeds.
Later at home, while she’s napping, Mato receives mail. It’s from Yomi but there’s a catch. There was no content, not even a subject. Mato’s high is short lived.
Using her brain for the first time in a long time, she decides to go out to that place. Her Mom catches her and asks her where she’s going and she blurts out…’YOMI’. Composing herself she says ‘To Where Yomi is’. It sounded to me like ‘Yomi’s Place’ not in the home sense but special place sense which makes me wonder when her special spot(Where she was going) turned into Yomi’s!
When Mato does get to the top of the hill, there is no Yomi but she does find something else. She finds the strap that she gave to Yomi as a present. She holds the strap to her chest and mourns for Yomi. The strap in her hands starts to glow. Looks like their love turned into magic of some sort for it seems as if it was responding to Mato’s heartfelt wish of finding Yomi. The magic light swallows Mato.
Back to the Spiritual world, BRS is still in Dead Master’s chains. Dead Master is standing there before her wondering what to do next. The two fix each other with looks. One with that of wanton and sadness and the other with that of sweet victory and satisfaction but…As BRS looks deeper into Dead Master’s eyes, there is a sadness there that doesn’t compliment her sinister smirk in any way. BRS would rather anything else than see her like that. Her love fuels the burning fires within her heart and Black Rock Shooter breaks free of the chains binding her.
Dead Master takes a step back. Better safe than sorry. She gets ready for round nth when BRS stands and starts to approach her with a purpose but instead of Black Rock Shooter attacking; she does the ‘Oide’ thingy again. Dead Master is confused by the action this time around not knowing the meaning of the gesture seeing as BRS wasn’t armed. She backs away from the crazy girl but she is out of room and starts falling.
She doesn’t even get the next foot off when Black Rock Shooter is there, hugging her for dear life. Dead Master is super surprised but the surprise is short lived. Dead Master wants nobody’s pity! Who did the silly girl think she was?!!!
And so Dead Master does everything she could to push Black Rock Shooter away from her. She really does try her hardest, if her facials are anything to go by, but BRS ain’t barging. The power of love is on her side. She is never ever letting go again. But poor Dead Master, who can’t handle the loving is forced to let go and voila, There is not Dead Master in Black Rock Shooter’s arms but Takanashi Yomi! Dead Master loses the hold she had had on Yomi.
Yes, Yomi was Dead Master and Black Rock Shooter was Mato.
Drumroll please!
Upon Dead Master’s defeat, her castle and throne start to crumble and sink. BRS escapes majestically while cradling Yomi bridal style!
Hell yeah~
Getting back to Mato who has just been swallowed by a brilliant magic, she finds herself in heavens filled with actual star-shaped stars (…what!) while still holding onto the phone strap. She looks around in wonder then the strap glows again. A voice speaks and asks,
“Do you want to save her? You feel very strongly for her and so does she for you.”
Mato looks up and there in front of her Black Rock Shooter is floating. She asks if BRS meant Yomi.
Erm, well DUH! Mato.
Mato says that she doesn’t want to save her. She just wants to walk alongside her once more. She wants to laugh with her again. She wants to see Yomi as soon as possible.
It’s enough for Black Rock Shooter so she descends to Mato’s level. Mato asks her who she is. What her name is.
The two merge.
BRS’s eyes open and she activates her Blue Geass! She says,
“BLACK ROCK SHOOTER!”
Enter ED that isn’t even sang by Miku. Total fail! An anime like this deserves a KOTOKO or better yet, any female ED damn it! But I guess since it is based on that same song, I am forced to like it!
After the ED, life goes on and so does school. Mato and Yomi are back to living happily ever after and smiling like the love birds that they are.
But wait, Yuu is kinda blending in with the background. Not a good thing in my book.
Next villain, GET!
Not that she wasn’t one to begin with as far as I am concerned! I bet my money that she had planned everything from the beginning.
Whew. That has been one long summary.
Here is what my take on the events is;
1. Yomi disappeared right when Dead Master manifested when she was outside Mato’s class. I didn’t see her shadow pass by the opaque glass so I think she disappeared right then and there.
2. When Mato and BRS merged, she went to the Spiritual world and battled many others on her journey to find Yomi/Dead Master. The fight that wasn’t with Dead Master is one of those traveling duels, me thinks, before she made it to Dead Master. Or…
3. Seeing as Yuu really wasn’t that close to Mato to induce such yandere upon Yomi’s return, I take it to mean that she already had access to the Spiritual World before she met Mato and that the Red eyed girl Black Rock Shooter battled at the beginning might be the Oh so popular basketball club president. Those two might be connected somehow in the Spiritual world and have a grander role in things. The tailed girl I placed to be Yuu and if Dead Master was BRS’s first contact, then I take it to mean that Mato went back in for Yuu after she got her Yomi back and it is where the other battles happened but this is if my second guess is wrong.
Either way, I love this OVA so damn much! As if my dedication to its summary isn’t enough to show it! Took me three days to do this thing I tell you.
Long live Mato/Yomi & Dead Master/BRS.
Totally joining the list of my favourite couples!
This OVA is so yuri!
Peace…

Very relevant comment indeed.
P.S. You could fit the entire aniblogosphere’s musings about this OVA into one post and it’d still have less information than yours

Ha!
I knew you hadn’t read the OVA Summary yet! ^^
And yeah, this was one long post! I had to go through the caps three times to cut them down almost 40%.
If I hadn’t, it would have been 550 caps long >.<
