Classic Meeting is Classic

Another new entry I have my eye on is Moretsu Pirates. I love this season so much so far with all these anime with female leads. You know, I don’t get it. Most anime is created by men, right? You’d think there would be more female leads than male but alas, it seems every creator model their male leads after themselves. Sad, I tell you *shakes head*.

Any ways, many female leads this season, okay, not many but enough, and the lead in Moretsu – Kato Marika has to be one of my favourites so far. Actually they are all great. We have the virgin Mary-like Madoka (No no, not that Madoka. I am talking about Rinne’s Madoka), we have the Loli  Assassin Sonya (in Kill Me Baby), the Bad-Ass Hibiki in Symphogear, cute Milky Holmes with the ever sexy rival Henriette , the soon to come BRS and her soul mate Dead Master and finally here we have the intelligent and soon to be captain of a space pirate ship, who looks cute/sexy just like Alicia (Aria). Combine that with her Yomi (GaRei)-look alike Co and this is gonna be one great series/season.

 
 
 
 

 
 

The first episode was all about setting the map for the story to come. There was Marika going about her daily life when two strangers suddenly show up iinto her life. It begins at her place of work when the strangers tell her that they knew her Mother.

Later at home, the same man and woman from the cafe show up but they are all dressed in black as if coming from a funeral. This catches Marika’s attention but she dismisses it until dinner time when the real reason they are dressed as such is brought to light.

Apparently the strangers are space pirates, licensed space pirates. While Marika is sceptical about the existence of pirates, another bomb is dropped on her. The strangers are dressed as such because they are mourning the death of their captain – who turns out to be Marika’s father! And no one can succeed him in his role other than a member his family which of course is Marika. So in other words, the two are there to recruit Marika as their captain. Funny enough, apparently the big bad deceased captain was done in by a simple thing as food poisoning. Luffy should try poisoning all those badass villain in One Piece too.

What really got me here was that Marika was more shocked about being made captain of a pirate ship instead of the death of her father. In fact I dare say she didn’t seem all that interested in this news. It didn’t help at all that her mother was even less interested. Marika wasn’t told nothing about her father or even the fact that both he and her mother were actually space pirates. By the way, Marika’s mother Ririka is so sexy. I so dig her wild hair which makes me think of Queen’s Blade’s Risty.

 
 
 
 
 


 
 

Next day at school, Marika’s class not only does it get a new homeroom teacher but they also get a new transfer student. And dear Readers, here was where things started to look promising to me. First of all, (though it might have been a lie since I saw no ring but really who cares) the Dude from before is the new teacher but he tells the class that he is already married so there goes that trap! I say trap in that the night before when he was over at Marika’s house, Marika blushed a little when their eyes met but that is not unusual so I dismissed it, though the threat remained until this class. And anyways the new transfer student seems to have shifted Marika’s attention to herself. As for the Dude, since he will be the Helmsman of Marika’s ship means that we will be seeing more of him later on so time to give him a name. Since he is going by the alias Kane McDougal, I will be calling him McDog instead.

The transfer student – Kurihara Chiaki.

I was so having Homuran flashbacks when Chiaki made her entrance into the class during her cooler years. All students went ga-ga over her as those in Madoka Magica did over HomuHomu. And better yet, Marika was so taken by Chiaki’s cool looks just as Madoka was including the blushes and ‘She’s cute’ comment we all know and love. It here I just knew we are going to be seeing great things from these two in the future episodes. then as Chiaki took her seat (one seat behind Marika) and as she passed by Marika, there is this…thing that transpired that made me grin so wide I felt all my face muscles crack. I animated it so you could see it for yourselves here.

Like, what in God’s name was that?! Even Marika doesn’t know what just happened. I guess it shall be Chiaki’s secret, for now!

McDog and the lady from before (who visited Marika’s home with McDog) apparently infiltrated the school not only to keep an eye on their new captain but to also recruit gifted girls for their new crew. They seem to know nothing about Chiaki but they are alerted by her so I guess Chiaki has lots of secrets as well. Good thing she on the good side (well as future events seem to tell us but we shall be getting to that).

 
 
 
 
  
 
 

 
 
 

Later at her part-time job at the cafe, the shop is filled with all kinds of shady customers with suits and shades over their eyes while others looked like they just jumped out of a comic book. Marika’s friend Mami (who when she speaks I can’t but think of Maka from Soul Eater – same VA) notices that they all seem to have their eyes on Marika. Uh-oh, what could be happening? But before things go down, a new customer appears  – Chiaki-chan!

If her reaction to Mami’s assumption that she knows the guys in suits and shades, I guess she is a kind of Ojou-sama and the dudes are her bodyguards who came in before her to ‘secure the premise’ before her arrival. Chiaki’s character of a cool beauty is soon shattered though when it comes for her to make an order. She’s either never had sweets in her life or she loves them so much that she literally goes bazonkers simply from just seeing the pictures of parfaits on the menu! then the way she eats said treat!! Oh lawd! Dear Chiaki, you just gave your weakness away. I won’t be surprised when Marika makes use of it later on to get what she wants from Chiaki.

Any ways, it seems that Chiaki might know about Marika’s other situation or even more – By other situation I mean the fact that she is a captain now of a space pirate ship. Chiaki starts drilling Marika with questions but they are interrupted by yet another arrival. This time it’s a guy in a police uniform claiming to have come to Marika’s protection by request from her mother. As Marika wonders why her mother didn’t inform her before hand about this, Chiaki reveals the lies behind the police claimant. With his cover blown, he decides to resort to plan B but Chiaki reacts in time and comes to Marika’s rescue!

So now she’s playing the hero card? How more awesome can she get? it’s like, just episode one. Chiaki drags Marika off to safety (hand in hand) and thus endth this episode.

Ooh, totally looking forward to more of this. All episode 01s I’ve seen so far have left me wanting more. It might just be that it’s been so long since I watched a lot of anime but I feel real pumped for this season for some reason!

Chiaki and Marika are very promising as well and I am looking forward to see how their characters are in relation to each other. I know what position Marika is to play but I can’t place Chiaki.

Totally looking forward to more.
