Yuri Is Life!

Snow Flower, Lily and the Secret Fan

Last year it was Black Rock Shooter. The year before that it was Nanoha the 1st. The one before that it was Candy Rain, Miao Miao and Crazy/Beautiful.

It seems that no matter how slow a year is, there is always that one movie, that one show that will make you glad you were alive to that day. That you had the chance to be able to see it.

Well guess what Ladies and Gentlemen, it is only the first quarter of 2011 and we already are glad to be here. The first treat of the year has to be the one Anime everybody is talking about. I am not a talker but if you spend your days off reading what other viewers think of an anime to the point of doing nothing else all day, then you have think of only one such epic anime – Madoka Magica!

But we already know the EPIC levels at which Madoka is having drink and dangling her lings from so I have to apologize but it is not Madoka that I write this. instead let’s get to the topic of the title.

A new movie is coming out soon that has had me going ballistic crazy with lack of sleep because of all the delusions I’ve been having each night. The fact that no a day has gone by that I’ve not watched it helps little to none. It’s suddenly my most view video on my phone.

Sigh.

See what I mean?

Any who, the movie title is…

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Official Site

Here is the official synopsis.

  • Inspired by the bestselling novel SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See, the film is a timeless portrait of female friendship. In 19th-century China, seven-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong – or “old sames” – bound together for eternity.  Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan.In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong’s descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai.  Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

Now that, is what I call ‘Hook, Line & Sinker’. If that hasn’t gotten you all riled up, you don’t deserve it (JK).

It stars Gianna Jun/Jun Ji Hyun/ (Saya in Blood the Last Vampire) and Lee Bing Bing/Fan Bing Bing/. Of course everyone know the latter for I swear she is like the female version of Samuel L J. That lady has stamina with all the movies she’s doing. And I gotta say that I love all her roles.

In Twins Effect 2 she played the awesome Red Vulture who was like the Kyoko to Blue Bird’s (Gillian Cheng) Sayaka.

Blue Bird & Red Vulture

Then last year she played the Queen of the Universe in the movie ‘A Chinese Long Story’, who fell in love with Charlene Choi’s Character (But this was revealed only at the end so it was bittersweet).

Fan as Queen

Like if you don’t know who Ms Bing Bing is…

I will dump some Gianna and Fan pics soon. So you have absolutely no excuse.

Any who, the prospect of bonds that last through more generations than that of the Sailor Scout’s or even Chikane & Himeko’s is a treat to die for!

And I hear the movie is based off a book?!!

Dear Amazon,

Hugh Jackman…bah! I’m too busy looking at the screenies. 🙂

I read the book. It’s about a very close friendship, it haves nothing to do with ” Yuri ”.

Well, it depends on your definition of ‘yuri’.

If you mean the kind of two girls making out, well, it is not.

This is the subtle kind, which I myself prefer to the obvious and it is the kind I cover on this site.

      This is definitely girl’s love.

And there is nothing to say the movie will follow the book to the T. Remember Devil Lady Anime and Source differences?

I stumbled upon your site by chance and this post caught my eye. I even borrowed the book from the library and am looking forward to what appears to be an endearing story of friendship. The basic setting and story brought to mind another book I read last summer. Have you ever read “Women of the Silk,” by Gail Tsukiyama? If not, I highly suggest it.

    Thank you very much!

I will see if I can buy that book you recommend.

As for Lily, I am waiting to see the movie first then I will read the book. this way, if there are hidden messages in the book, I will not miss them. Source material has a way of ruining movies though as far as this one is concerned, people who have read the book don’t consider it relevant which the movie turns around 180 in just the trailer!

I will believe the trailer for now, watch the movie, then read the book and see what all the fuss is about.

But a friendship that lasts thousands of re-incarnations…If ain’t shippable, I don’t know what is really.

Thank you for visiting and commenting, Hitori Bocchi.

You’re welcome; thank you for letting me visit!

I should clarify: in my above comment, ‘friendship’ is meant as “beautiful, eternal love between two friends”, by which I mean girls’ love. I definitely agree with your input. Besides, I, too, own a very high-powered pair of ‘yuri-goggles’. This film will not disappoint.

On a side note, I’ve taken the liberty of perusing your blog. We have similar thoughts about many things. I enjoy the fact that you discuss girls’ love/yuri not only in anime and manga, but in other media genres as well.

Keep up the good work! If I have the time (and you don’t mind) I might leave comments on some of your older posts. And yes, I’ve clicked the ‘subscribe’ button below.

If you do read “Women of the Silk,” I’m curious to know what you think. It’s one of my favorite novels.

Please don’t misunderstand. I was referring to the other commenter who said that they read the book and that there is no yuri! I bet their definition of yuri is hentai or Kanamiko as subtext >_>!

I don’t mind at all what you decide to do for I appreciate the visits a lot and more so if you comment. 🙂

Now you have me even more interested in Women of the Silk. 😆

My favorite book shall forever be Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and I have been dying to read another great book. If this Women of the Silk is your favorite, I bet it will be great.

Hmm, Just realised I haven’t written about books yet, not even Fingersmith…I am disappoint in myself.

Thank you again for the comment and please, do lurk around.
