Japan!

It is a fact that is known by anyone who knows Japan that there is no country that is weirder than Japan! To discuss and rate just how a given country is, you have to bring up Japan as the top standard! I have seen so many weird things from Japan that it boggles my mind how at the same time it is so reserved.

Be it pron, movies, anime, drama and even in real life, there is crazy stuff in every medium! But the craziest will always be in movies! This has been going on for a long time. You only have to look at those older anime (Fist of the North Star, Akira, and Mega Police in anime, the Tomie series in movies, etc). Japan has been releasing crazy stuff for ages.

And this applies to yuri too. There are old movies that have yuri and though not the main points, they still happened and they were real yuri scenes. I might blog about two examples sometime. Remember the short drama I blogged about a while ago that aired in 1992? Have we seen a drama since then that is bold enough to tackle yuri like that? Nope!

And this is the issue – Instead of getting less tight about things, Japan is instead getting tighter! The anime these days is all for primary schoolers. Yuri movies and shows are so scarce and even when we get one, it is always so tamed. It’s like the directors seems afraid to take the story where it should go! We always get half-assed jobs these days! It’s frankly, maddening!

It’s as if Japan is taking the opposite direction compared to the rest of the world when it comes to moral issues! I wouldn’t be surprised if they are heading in the 20th Century Boys future!

But!

That being said, there always comes a Director or a project that reminds you of that spirit of Japan that got you into the culture in the first place! This mini-series titled ‘Real Onigokko Rising’ – a three episode cinematic series is such project!

‘Real Onigokko’ is a very famous series in Japan. It is kind of like the baby sister to ‘Battle Royale’ but instead of kids killing each other, they are instead killed by someone, usually some government people. ‘Real Onigokko’ usually takes place in a school where a class, or a certain blood type, or some crazy way the government comes up with to reduce population, are decimated, in the most horrific way!

There are five movies that I know of. I have watched four of those and I only kept one of them, the fourth one! Why? Well, not only does it have lovely Miki Honoka in it but she is a major character who actually survives! Best of all, the other survivor is a girl a year ahead of her and the two have these cutes moments through out the movie that just screamed for me to ship them!

This time, this next project in the franchise (Rising) takes a bit of diversion from the usual formula. I have only gotten a chance to watch the first two episodes (of three in total) and both of them have been very different from the Onigokko I know.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that there is a new Real Onigokko movie coming out and it is kind of relevant actually. First of all it has Mariko-sama in it and not only her but Mano Erina as well. There is another girl to close off the tri-leads but most of you don’t know her, yet! This movie is the usual Onigokko from the trailer I have seen.

These three episodes, that might actually be movies, short ones like Yuko’s ‘Teke Teke’, thought even shorter at around the 40min runtime on average, are very different from the Real Onigokko we all know. As I have said – I have watched the first two episodes so why am I skipping the first one seeing as this is about episode 2? Well, that is because the first one is irrelevant. There is no yuri and interestingly, it is the one closest to the Real Onigokko.

It is close but not the same. The main change being that the students were elementary this time around. Actually the second episode also had elementary cast. Anyway the first episode did a reversal in that instead of the kids being hunted, this time they did the hunting game! There was a murderer on the loose that killed one of their classmates and three boys once ran into him while they were playing in school during none-school day!

They twisted the story around and given the cast, it was of course pretty safe! Sure when you think of it deeply, the thought of those young children beating the crap out of the man with all kinds of weapons is really terrifying! But the episode did not give us any gory details. All of that was between the lines and thus only the already broken people would see the seeds planted within.

The first episode was also the shortest, pulling in at around the half an hour mark.

Interestingly, the second episode, my favorite out of the three, and the one that brought back the crazy I have been missing was also the longest out of the three! It was about 50mins long! Almost made it into movie time territory and the crazy thing is that the whole movie happened in a secluded location with only two characters for the most part (three at max). These characters were not even junior high students yet!!!

I have seen a ton of crazy stuff before from Japan but I found myself shocked once again with this second episode of Real Onigokko Rising! Looking at the cast I never had any thought that the story would progress as it did! I promise you now that if you have a sicker mind than mine (which I doubt because I am very proud of this sicko brain of mine!) you will find this story that much more disturbing! I wonder if I can speak real thoughts about this experience. Oh well, jump right ahead and let’s find out…

But before that, I wish to thank another great Reader pho for the shout out about this series. I would so have not seen it if you did not mention it to me. I no longer am able to use AsiaTorrents and we all know what happened to D-Addicts tracker. Basically I can no longer get to Asian Drama series as easily as I used to. So, thank you very much for this pho!

Alright, episode two here we go. This episode picks up from right where we left off from episode one. Just like clockwork, we get more awesome Jeong-hyang scenes and of course, we still get Hong-do raining on our parade.

I tell you now, these people at the studio who were in charge of this had to have been divided into two separate shippers just like the audience! And while the plot said that Jeong-hyang was END-GAME, that didn’t mean that the journey there wouldn’t be filled with both sides fighting it out to the death. The amount of Hong-do/Yun-bok is too much it is sickening! That trend went throughout the series and it stays true even in this episode.

Still, no matter how many scenes Hong-do has with Yun-bok, the chemistry between Jeong-hyang and Yun-bok always wins by the end of the episode, even if it was just one scene in total.

Enough rumbling, let’s get it on with the episode.

its been 84 years

Dear Reader, since I have the time, and having been reminded by the community in the Hibike discussion, I decided to re watch Painter of the Wind – my favourite Korean TV show ever and really, one of my top 3 shows in existence. There are still shows like Xena, TTSCC and Buffy and those are like my guilty pleasures. Xena was like, the show that made the word ‘subtext’! It deserves all the respect!

PotW aired all the way back in 2008 starring the two world’s favourite Moons – Moon Geun-Young and Moon Chae-won. Wipe that grin off your face, they are not sisters! Anyone into Korean culture should know who Geun-young is and only the core fans know who Chae-won is. I have to confess that I did not know who she was too before seeing her in PotW.

In the 2008 SBS drama awards, Chae-won and Geun-young won the very first, and as far as I am aware, the only yuri best couple award for their roles in Painter of the Wind.

Geun-young played our heroine Shin Yun-bok, a daughter of a famous artist that was killed when she was young due to a scandal on a political scale. In order to save her and for her to be able to utilise the talents of artistry passed down to her from her father, she had to disguise herself as boy since women were apparently not allowed to go into that profession. Yun-bok grew up with the lads as a boy attending the art school with a dream of being the King’s painter.

Chae-won on the other hand played the Gisaeng (Female Entertainer) Jeong-hyang, who was the pride of the town and everyone wanted a piece of her (just like any other love interest for the main character really). But her story was not a fun one. As she tells Yun-bok this very first episode – She is no wild flower that is free for anybody’s picking.

So, why now after all this time? A Reader of mine asked me a long time ago to write about it and I said I was waiting for better subs, which I thought would be coming with the DVDs. I watched the series again when I bought the boxset. The Taiwanese version that I got had English subtitles with it but the DVD quality was not one to write home about. And so I waited for the HD episodes which showed up and when I tried to rip the subtitles from the DVDs to use on the HD episodes, I failed miserably. I could only get the subtitles as idx/sub files and I needed to re-time them to fit the TV since the TV ones had that intro with the ratings.

I somehow forgot about it since then but then came Hibike Euphonium and the ship wars that followed and I was ready to laugh at such childish wars. Seeing all those heated battle, I sat there just reminisced of the years long gone. To think that people are having ship wars over Shuichi! If anyone is like that over Hibike, I think they would simply commit suicide watching PotW. It’s been over 7 years and I still FEEL! But all was worth it! Having said that, I know of people who still don’t think that PotW had a GOOD YURI END. Hopefully if such a person still exists, my run through of the series will erase those doubts.

If this were any other series, it would be a reverse harem, a la Ouran Host Club. Yun-bok was a girl disguised as a boy in an all male school. She had three potential love interests in her step brother Hyung-min (who knew her secret), her rival in school Hyo-won as best protégé and their new teacher Hong-do, who fell in love with Yun-bok and was probably who the other audience that was not shipping the yuri were supporting. He was this close to winning the Yun-bowl but thankfully her finger was already bound with a red string to someone else.

Now, before we proceed, if you are new to this show, I warn you. Just like any Korean Drama you know of, the drama is too intense and the feels sometimes go way to deep. Not to mention the het side had the upper hand all the damn time! But unlike most times that I just simply cannot stand it, this time I could not help but take all them feels on and cry like a pansy every other episode. Every episode is an hour long. Twenty hours of feels, can you handle them? If you are sure, well then let us be on our way…

So, is anyone watching the new Scream series? The first episode just aired and I could not help but fall prey to the bait that is going so hard in that episode. Oh yes, by scream I mean the Scream – ‘Ghost Face’ Scream. To me that is the best teen slasher to ever exist! ‘I Know What you Did Last Summer’ is like six seconds behind it! So, while it is no secret that I love horror genre that is not why I am talking about this.

I was really surprised when the episode all but opened with two girls making out in a car at night! The video was in a queue and I had watched a couple of other videos before getting to it so when I got to this episode and was bombarded by that scene, I went blank wondering what the hell I was watching since I did not have any lesbian show I knew of in the queue. I had to exit that full screen and check the title and then I saw ‘Scream’ and I was like…Well damn!

BL FOR THE WIN!!!

Yeah, I can’t believe I just said that! Two days later and I am still thinking about it! To think that at the end of it all Boys’ Love would take the cake!

Now of course as far as official winners go, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Saeman won, right? Everyone in that studio (and someone in front of the screen) was ready to have his babies the instant their eyes fell on his awesome excellency! Too bad for them (and a certain someone) Renacchi won that bowl!

But we already found out the first half that this time it wasn’t just about cosplay! It’s all about the love story and how many heart strings would fall prey to it. And dear Readers, this second round was all out deadly! Directors Kitarie, Suzuran and Maokyun brought their A-game so it’s no surprise everyone won in their own way! Suzuran won the casting (Sometime the actor makes the movie because Mein Gott, that Saeman). Kitarie won best cinematography (damn curtain scene). Meanwhile Maokyun pulled a complete KyoAni on everyone when she totally baited them and left them standing wondering WTF they had just seen and where their fish is!

Tuesday night has been the best night all year, no arguments! Not only did KyoAni deliver the best ending ever to the best anime of the year (come on, this is going down in history) but we got to have this lovely Danso Love Story battle! No need to mention the hardships faced in trying to fall asleep Tuesday night!

Now then, onto the episode…
