So sorry this took long but a Reader reminded me of this when they commented and reminded me of how awesome Miyu is and so here we are with the second episode/part of this story.

Seriously, Miyu was a total Badass in this movie! I really love TGS, they know how to utilize the girls’ traits/skills. Of course Ayano and Mei would play Angela the Diva of The Narrows! Of course Yuri would take on the bouncer role, with her usually masculine ways. And of course Miyu would play the scary role! Many people cower under her just from looking at them! Definitely the best choice for a yakuza!

Then there are the relationships between the characters. Just as usual in their works, there would always either be something between Miyu and Hitomi or Miyu and Mei. They were connected here too, in fact much more so than usual all three were connected unlike before. The intensity between Hitomi and Miyu was off the charts this episode. Sadly it is not in a romantic way but rather in that clashing way! They are enemies, there is no denying that but at the same time there is something under the layers that just makes us fans jump in our seats with giddiness!

Interestingly Ayano wasn’t neglected this time around. She is usually the third wheel when it comes to pairings but not this time. That is all I have to say about her at this moment as anything more would be spoilers. Then again I am pretty sure if anyone has seen the first part they have seen the whole movie seeing as it is not broken down into parts. But please pretend it is!

Meanwhile with Mei and Yuri, things go back to the usual with them not being utilized in official works. The only time we got MeiYuri was in Tsuioku, before and after that Mei was strangely almost always paired with Miyu. It got to the point where I thought there would be bad blood between those two. But then again it is all professional, Yuri still gets to have Mei to herself outside of work so…Anyway let’s move this along.

The Narrows

Praised be Tokyo Girls’ Style and that includes their management and sponsor (Avex). I am sure there are some of you that are getting sick of me just worshipping this group but their fan service is almost godly! This is strange considering that they are less dependent on fans than any other Idol groups a fact is stranger now since they are no longer Idols. Yeah, I mentioned it a while back but TGS have taken that first step to their dreams by graduating from a mere Idol group to full artists. ‘Stay With Me’ being the first evidence of this reality as the lyrics for that single were written by Yamabe Miyu the previous leader (Shyoji Mei is the current leader of TGS). Speaking of Miyu, her little sister just joined AKB as a Draftee member for Team B. And speaking of those three Draftees, they have already performed their first song (Miniskirt fairy) which happened before Hikari’s graduation performance.

Going back to TGS, when I heard that they would be graduating from being an Idol group, I was really worried! To me graduating means much more than what it does to the others. If a member graduates from a group even if they are going to still be in the entertainment industry like movies of TV dramas, they are different! For example Acchan, sorry, Assan is different to me now! I still miss Akarin (Momoiro Clover) terribly and would be all over Momoclo once again like I was were she to return but even as she is still in movies and TV, it is not the same. I won’t be going out of my way to look out for all the projects she in. This will probably be true with Yukirin when she leaves AKB. Things are just never the same! And so I was worried about TGS!

But it seems there was no need for worry because TGS has not changed! They are still doing exactly what they were doing before. They are still holding LIVE performances – at a frequency that would put any other group except the 48G to shame! They still do their lovely streams and still release singles Idol style. Then again maybe the momentum just hasn’t picked up yet. I don’t think that is the case though.

What is this post about exactly? Well dear Readers, I am sure you remember last year when I was posting about these preview videos they put together for their special live. The title for that five month project was ‘Hard Boiled Night’ and they would release a special video for each month’s performance. Those previews were so good I was crying for a full TV show based on those short videos or even a movie. A good few months later and guess what happens?

Those awesome Devils go and release a full 2 hour movie of said project!

Like, how happier can a TGS fan be after this fact! Now sure we internal fans got fucked over with that 5tsu premium box incident when they only released them at a handshake event and thus impossible for us to get out hands on them but other than that, TGS and their management have had a perfect record since day one! I even forgive them for that fiasco with the release of Hard Boiled Night. They did not have an obligation to release those special LIVEs! In fact they just included the thing as an extra in their 1st major album instead of releasing a boxset of those lives on their own like they would have had they intended on releasing them in the first place. Could it be that they were actually making up for the 5tsu miscall?

Now Hard Boiled Night is not a feature length goldmine like any other movie. Like we might have deduced from months, actually a year now, this was episodic. There were five episodes in total but instead of just putting these episodes together seamlessly like say how Innocent Lilies did it with their BD release, here with Hard Boiled night, they included cuts of the LIVE performances right in between scenes in the movie parts. While you might think that this would be a distraction from the story, it is actually not. In fact the songs they choose to include complement the story perfectly. Sure it was different watching a movie like that; to go from a serious scene to a stage performance but it was done well!

Just like their first single ‘Kirari’ and their first intro into the acting department in their two movies 5tsu and Noroi no Kotodama, the girls surprised me once again with Hard Boiled Night, which is kind of like their first real Drama, after all, it was episodic! I believe I have mentioned it but I was really surprised by the story in Noroi no Kotodama and more so by the acting of the girls who had like, a month of experience (they shot the two movies 5tsu and NnK almost at the same time). The twist in NnK was just too brilliant! I remember the sound in that movie getting so much on my nerves that I thought I had gotten a faulty disc but it turned out that was all part of the plot!

Actually since chances are that I will not be blogging about that movie I don’t see why I can’t talk about it with spoilers here. The movie was so well put together that there was no way you could have figured out what was happening without watching it through to the end being hit with that twist! At the surface it looked like another haunted movie – A group of students who get stuck in school and start to experience supernatural events. That is what you get to think until the ending! I think the concept has been done before but executed differently and that is that the whole class, apart from Hitomi’s character and her friends who had come to this haunted school, the students that were in uniform at school were all ghosts but did not know that they were dead! When you are watching the movie from their perspective, the sound is really off and distracting. You only learn the reason for this when you find out that it was like that because they were in a different dimension, forgotten by time as they died without knowing it and thus thought they were still alive. That was until strange things begin to happen.

Yeah, strange things happening to ghosts, believe me spent the night upon watching that movie without sleeping! It is such a great movie and reminds me a lot of Stephen King’s Langoliers! That movie is three hours long and yet every time I start to watch it I could never stop. It was just so intriguing and one of a kind.

Will I ever never be distracted?

Hard Boiled Night was just another surprise from TGS and co. The actual thing was way more serious than I actually thought it would be. That ending man, that ending was so not what I was expecting. But then again, the route the story took was nothing like I was expecting! I figured it would be just fun! They wouldn’t be such serious characters and I thought I would have to write a fic to take tackle the dark side of the story but the joke was on me! The story was as serious as you would think one would be with characters like Yakuza and Bouncers!

And since I am getting into spoiler territory here, might as well start the actual post…

Saying Long Goodbye to Tokyo Girls’ Style?

20150520_171657

Could it be? Has the time come for my wallet to be saved? Is this goodbye to my favourite Idol group ‘Tokyo Girls’ Style’? Yeah, sure this blog is all about AKB48 (Yukirin really if I am being truthful) but there is no denying the fact that not even the 48G combined has taken as much money from me as TGS has! I believe I have said it before but ever since I got into TGS, I have purchased every single release of theirs!

But now it seems that they have apparently graduated from being Idols and into artists, whatever the hell that implies for us, especially the international fans! The last single before the latest is all making kinds of sense right about now! First of all this means there won’t be TGS in this year’s Idol Festival! And though this might mean more tour releases, I am gonna miss the perks of being an Idol! Like, why did they even decide to do that? This is like the Idol revolution times we live in! I have a feeling many artists have a grudge against Idols these times and yet TGS decided to diss Idoling (no pun intended) for artists?! I don’t get it!

And everything was looking promising for them having just broken into the movie-verse with their first two hit movies! And all this after I was ready to kneel down and worship the good Lord for the miracle that is the latest single (Stay With Me)! Let me tell you about ‘Stay With Me’! You won’t believe it but that song was written by none other than Miyu herself! That’s right, the Yamabe Miyu of Tokyo Girls’ Style! And though at first it might seem like a message to fans, I take it the other way as usual! The catalyst being that Hiichan (Arai Hitomi) is like the solo singer of the song where as the others are just support and only pitch in during the choruses! And so I am sitting there and thinking – Miyu wrote this song! Hiichan is singing this song! Conclusion?

Is there even a need to say it? Me think not!

So anyway I bought their 1st Major Album Kirari that has all their songs to date! Spent over 100 bucks on this but really, what’s new? Not that I could have done any less seeing as they included Blurays and this was like their closure to their Idol life! I am really torn as to what to feel or do really!

Any way, in addition to TGS SWAG as usual, I also bought the next movie in the Jinroh series ‘Beast Side’ starring Irie Saaya! Of course it wasn’t just Saaya that got me to buy this, nope, there is that little fact that the previous movie tickled my shipper soul especially with that ending and I am so bitter that we did not get the actual sequel to it! It left the story so very open-ended but just like Rie and Joker Game, this is a different story with different characters, which is really sad! But then there is that supporting character list that has the very fabulous Morikawa Aoi and our new girl Aoyama Misato! I of course was going to get this no matter what, also the fact that I love Asian Horror helped! Absolutely can’t wait to watch all this goodness!

See more scans after the jump…

5-tsu kazoere ba kimi no yume  ~ 5つ数えれば君の夢

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just watched TGS’s 5-tsu movie and let me tell you right now, I believe in miracles! Let me tell you a little secret – TOKYO GIRLS’ STLE is actually my favourite Idol group! Yes, it even beats out AKB and NMB! Yes, I can just see you frowning or laughing at this apparent lie and believe me, I was in denial as well for a while but not anymore. Forgetting the fact that my beloved NMB was fucked up since Feb, or the old, old fact of the way AKB treats (or doesn’t treat) my Goddess, the hard evidence staring right at me right now in my room proves everything! I have virtually purchased all of TGS’s releases and aside from the 5-tsu BD, I always go for the priciest version that is to say the best version. The 5-tsu thing isn’t my fault really. They did not sell the Limited Editions instead they gave them at a LIVE event, which really sucked for us international fans! But I am saving up to get that one copy on Amazon that is over 100 bucks and hopefully no one will have bought it before I get to it. And to those who are wondering about the other movie of theirs (the Horror one), I already ordered that too but it is in a different purchase which should be arriving next week. Also in that same purchase there is, yep, you guessed it, another TGS purchase – their 2014 tour!

So knowing all that, I ask thee, is there actually any other way that I can love these girls any more than I already do? You say no and truthfully I thought so too before I watched 5-tsu! First of all let’s mention a few facts. This movie was their first ever they starred in. Another fact is that Mei is now the Leader of TGS and not Miyu. Then there is also a personal fact of mine – I ship HitoMiyu as much as Japan loves Rice! And so with these facts already planted in my head, as the movie un-folded the enjoyment factor was multiplied by over 9000 when these facts were actually implemented in the movie! There are others too like Aachan’s music skills, Mei’s strange personality and Miyu’s air-headedness. I can say with confidence that fans drank this movie up with a thirst never known to man and TGS is actually very good at this. They are great at fan-service!

And frankly I cannot help but think the title reflects the ending more than anything. As to what I am talking about, what ending, well, you will have to wait a bit for I want to start with something else, you know, leave the best for last and all that. Then again, some can argue and I think they are right in their decision, that it wasn’t on HitoMiyu’s side that the fun most was but rather on Mei/Ayano’s side. I of course am ready to fight for my belief, which I will be doing too but before we get anywhere, first let’s look at the girls and their roles.

It is really very hard to tell who the heroine actually it. I mean even in a movie with many main characters, there is always an Alpha, the one that the story will focus on more than the rest. The one they will give the romance shenanigans or family matters just as a way to waste screen-time, the one always less entertaining to watch (what, it comes with the curse)! I was very surprised and even shocked when I couldn’t decide who the Alpha was in this movie! If you thought it was hard to decide from the trailer, well, the movie does absolutely nothing to help!

And this is one of the reasons I absolutely love this movie!

No girl’s/couple’s story over-shadowed the other’s. The girls met each other of course, their individual stories were a part of the whole story and each girl played a role in the driving of that story but no one’s story was stepping over the others’. No story dragged on more than it should have. No individual story was left hanging because of poor time distribution! The challenges were of course still there, especially during the transitions which was a bit hard sometimes.

So then, what of their roles? Well, going with the power hierarchy of their characters;
