Vanilla in Universe 단편영화 우주의 은유
And South Korea strikes once again, Ladies and Gentlemen, with yet another wonderfully put together short movie!
…Is It’s Own Reward!
Time for a confession dearest Readers! Today I have cried more than I have ever cried watching a movie in a long time! That movie is of course ‘Logan’. This is the final time we will ever get to see Hugh Jackman play this wonderful character, hell, I think even Mr Stewart!
The very first movie I watched in cinemas was 2000’s X-men! Since then I have watched every movie because of Wolverine. If there are others too who grew up with these characters then I warn you before hand if you have not watched this movie yet. Take some tissues with you! Do not be embarrassed when you break down while watching this movie! Everyone who is not new to these characters (and even those who are) will not even put up a fight! You are all going to cry your eyes out!
Why old fans, well, for me I was not crying because of what I was seeing on the screen but rather what the consequences and implications of what was being said and shown is what made me completely break down!
If you are only into this now, you will not appreciate Professor X and Wolverine’s relationship. You will not understand what they are feeling in the events of this movie. You will not fully grasp their inner conflict or the hidden meanings in their words they exchange!
For example, the moment that hit me the most was during a certain scene when the WTF moment happened and we finally saw what the evil organisation’s ‘success’ experiment was that saw them give orders to terminate the kids. What will make most, especially the new ones cry is not why I was crying. It was the implied and the unfortunate!
Okay, this is a spoiler so stop here if you do not want to know.
When Xavier died, it was not his death that broke me but rather what he implied just before the ‘success’ killed him and then the fact after. I never read the books so I had no idea but we find out (it is implied) that Professor X is the one that killed off all the mutants. Yeah, let that sink in your brains! If you are attached to these characters as I am then you think of all those people that Xavier cared for, all those people that believed in him, loved him and he snuffed them all out just like that!
Like, what even…
Logan survived obviously because of his abilities and physicality.
So all this time they have been surviving while Logan tried to both protect Xavier and the world because his brain was now a weapon of mass destruction! Seriously, when Professor X lost control I was truly terrified. They showed off his un-surpassed abilities perfectly.
And all this time he did not know what he had done. Both is own mind and the medicine that Logan had been giving him made him forget and prevent him from remembering what he had done because, man, can you imagine what he had done if he had remembered?
But he did remember, and just as he was confession to Logan, just as they were about to get that respite especially Logan, who had to live with this secret all by himself, the truth being spoken would have saved them both at least a handful of trauma but guess what happened…Xavier was talking to the wrong Logan. It was another clone of his and just as Xavier had finished his confession that would have been able to surely give Logan some much needed peace, he took three adamantium claws to the chest!
So Logan still doesn’t know that Charles knows. He did not get to hear his confession and Charles did not get to lift that burden off his last pupil. They were robbed off that! But at least Charles did not die thinking that Logan was the one to kill him. That would have been completely savage!
To close up, it was not that Charles died that made me cry but the fact that he had killed all of the mutants off, the fact that Logan knew and was saving him from finding out. The fact that Logan knew and he still cared for the Professor so much. The fact that they were robbed of the chance to leave this heavy burden aside between them.
And this is just one example!
So yeah, I cried so much I was wiping my face in the cinema like I was six or something. This movie was so good. So good that it totally failed at what it went out to do! That is that it was supposed to let go of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine but now I want him even more than I have ever wanted him! Looks like this is it for me! Without him I have no more interest in this universe.
God, this is just like Idol graduation! I mean the man has been playing the character for 17 years!!!! I should give him some slack. But hey, five more fans will take my place when I leave as they follow these new Gens but for me Hugh is Wolverine, Famke is Jean, Patrick is Professor X, Ian is Magneto, Halle is Storm, Anna is Rogue, James is Cyclops! These are my X-men and if this really is Wolverine’s last stand, then I am done too.
Thank you Fox, you got me into action movies with your first X-men movie but without Hugh, I have no business being here either, so, goodbye. We had a nice ride together, you and I!
Goodbye!
What is right vs Love. Finding Love amidst evil actions. One’s security getting in the way of Love. Criminals have hearts too. How far people are willing to go when backed up against a wall.
Tsumi no Yohaku AKA Crime’s Blank, a 2015 awesome crime drama takes on all these issues and statements and all I have to say is, forget the likes of Romeo and Juliet, this is what tragic love is all about! I have never had my heart pulled in all directions when it comes to the villains in movies like it was this time around! Maybe it is expected seeing as this villain, Saki (played by the captain of X21’s Yoshimoto Miyu), is actually also the protagonist of the story, even though her end was a BAD ONE, which makes her an actual villain in the end instead of an anti-heroine!
I can hear someone going ‘why now?’, well, the credit goes to this new drama that was recommended to me currently airing titled ‘Kuzu no Honkai’, which, if you are an anime person, you know of this as the anime version is also currently airing, and the main girl sure moves around. I am still at episode 2 and having been blown away by Miyu’s performance in those two episodes (are idols really allowed to do that?!!), I remembered that there was a movie she was supposed to be in and so I went and looked for it and dear Readers, am I glad I remembered it!
This girl is just so good! Add her in a big budget movie like Tsumi no Yohaku and man, what a ride! But it was not just her that got me to stay and write about this movie, nope, the other girls too both Uno Narumi (who plays our other half in Maho) and Yoshida Mikako (who plays the catalyst Kana). Those two were also great in their roles and their performances added greatly to the overall feel of the movie bringing that oomph to the punch!
Obviously the point and focus of this post is going to be on our ship in Saki and Maho! Having decided that maybe we have had enough of Korean Movie posts, this was kind of an excellent timing if you ask me! Better still the fact that Tsumi no Yohaku also has the same themes of the last movie talked about, the short ‘End of Summer’. Our main characters almost were similar but ended up taking different routes, an outcome that was also influenced by their partners.
Both having tragic endings but of different magnitude and brought on by opposite circumstances, makes me one sad but also happy citizen! And so I am thinking maybe I should approach this post by way of comparing this and End of Summer? Nah, nothing ever goes according to plan where I am concerned!

End of Summer / Summer’s Tail 여름의 끝자락
And yet another lovely short movie from Korean because, South Korea is awesome that’s why! And just like the one, literally the last post I put up, End of Summer is also as good as any other movie length feature! This time though the story here is super heavy, lots of FEELs with this one and I am pretty sure it won an award in its year at the festival, which was 2015. The fact that it was one of the selected five, and the only yuri movie in that selection that got the Plain Archive treatment, is testament to that.
Yes, I wanted to get that DVD but I was late to the pre-orders that just a day after release, I was already too late. They were old out! Thank God it was actually already up on Vimeo even before then and with English subtitles too so I was not left in the dark. So you all too will be able to watch it if you want, in case you do not want to be spoiled before you watch it, jump to the end of the post for the link to Vimeo.
This nice short really packs a heavy punch! The fact that it is so real and that the characters are very relatable in addition to what they go through being something so common, makes this one of my favourite shorts but really, the fact that I am writing about it should be telling already.
Yes, if you know that there is something I should know about but haven’t written about despite many comments letting me know about it, it means that I have seen it but that it wasn’t to my palate. Sometimes I have already seen it but it is still in the queue to be written about. For example, I thank you all for the Moon Young (Kim Tae-ri) shout out but do you really think I do not know about that!! You must be crazy! Lovely, but crazy!
True story, even before The Handmaiden, I already knew about Moon Young but only saw a short clip and there was none of that goodness that is in the current version everyone is going crazy about or by the gods, believe you me I would already have blogged about it. As things stand, I only need to find the best version, grab some caps and we are a go!
Same goes for the TV show Night Light. I watched 12 episodes of that show but dropped it because the amount of yuri was equally negated with the amount of hetero and with the same characters! Now, if someone tells me that the crack ship I actually had going in the awesomely developed friendship between Se-jin and Ma-ri, is looking up, then I am all aboard gain. Otherwise, my yuri-sense didn’t tingle at all in the 12 episodes I watch between Se-jin and Yi-kyung. Now, if you are telling me I missed something in the later episodes I did not watch, then I will jump right back in and maybe talk about it.
One last thing before we get back to the topic at hand, this is about Mediafire. Yes, I know many people these days can’t excuse a site that takes more than a second to load but please be patient with MF. It is still one of the best free sites (well, under 200MB) around from the old days and it takes a few seconds for the folders and files to show up so hold off on closing that tab thinking the links or site is broken.
With that out of the way, let’s get it on!

Alice – Crack of the Season 앨리스 – 계절의 틈
And yet another wonderful Korean Short movie! Korea is seriously turning into my favourite country right now. Japan is tailing Taiwan in the slacking off department and they are slowly losing my favour. Meanwhile Korea is challenging almost all mediums, with TV shows, blockbuster movies, indies and music. You wouldn’t even think it that they are the most strict about homosexuality of all the major players!
Butt seeing how these gay projects are proving to be quite popular among the people, starting all the way back with Moon Geun-young/Chae-won‘s awesome Painter of the Wind TV show that saw for the first and last time a gay couple win best couple in TV awards in addition to best actress and new comer for both our ladies, then going into Lily Fever that took off in the internets, and all the way to the big guns in our very own Ahgassi, I have a feeling we are in for a ride when it comes to Korea!
Almost all the past four years have seen at least two yuri movies show up in these indie film festivals with this one being from the 2016 rounds. There is one from 2015 that I will be writing about too, that actually made it into one of Plain Archive’s collection of the the best of the best shorts from that year. Too bad I made it too late to reserving my copy as they sold out as soon as it came to the release date. But I learned my lesson and everyday I keep an eye out for The Handmaiden pre-orders to hit so I can grab my copy as soon as possible. I have a feeling those will sell out the very day they are announced!
Any way back to the short at hand…
